The Business Studies Department at Lagan College is a very successful and dynamic department. Business Studies is followed by some students at Key Stage 3 and offered at GCSE, AS and A2 Level. The Business Studies Department has also assisted in the delivery of Information and Communication Technology and Employability to our Year 8, 9 and 10 students.
Year 10 Enterprise
At Key Stage 3, the Business Studies Department offers Year 10 students the opportunity to study Enterprise. Students work through a range of practical activities and have the chance to design their own business. Students also participate in a Project Business Event; this develops their skills in team working, problem solving, leadership and independent learning.

GCSE Business Studies
At Key Stage 4, we offer GCSE Business Studies. This is a very popular subject as it introduces students to a range of business topics such as management, marketing, production, finance and personnel. Students also complete a piece of controlled assessment which gives them the opportunity to carry out real research to solve a business based problem as posed by the examination board.
BTEC First Certificate in Business Studies Level Two.
This is the fourth year that the Business Studies Department have offered a GCSE equivalent subject. This course is vocational and assessed by 100% coursework. Students complete three major project units over the two years of Key Stage 4 and are awarded pass, merit or distinction. These are equivalent to a C, B or A at GCSE respectively. The three units include two compulsory units on Business Purposes and Business Organisations and one further optional choice. This has proved to be a very successful GCSE alternative and the results so far have been excellent. Learners are given the opportunity to develop a range of personal skills and attributes which are essential for further study or working life.
Applied A Level in Business Studies
A Level Business is another very popular choice and is offered to our Sixth Form students. Students enjoy the modular approach to this course and they also get involved in a business project, which is related to real business decision-making. Topics covered at A Level are an extension of those introduced at GCSE level. Vocational Business courses are offered at Sixth Form. The Applied A level is particularly suited to those students who want to specialise in Business Studies and enjoy working on coursework. The vocational style of learning relies more heavily on an assignment led approach and less emphasis is placed on external testing. Due to the strong practical focus, this course provides a range of opportunities for industry links through organised visits and visiting speakers. The Department has built strong links with companies such as Ikea, Sam Mouldings, Fujitsu, Asidua and B&Q. As both our A Level courses are related to the world of work covering topical current affairs issues, students find these courses enjoyable and very relevant to employment opportunities; our academic results reflect this strong interest.
The Business Studies Department attains consistently high academic results across all levels of study. For the past 4 years the Department have had the overall 2nd placed student in CCEA Applied A Level Double Award Business. This year we were delighted to have achieved first and second place in Northern Ireland. All our Business Studies students are strongly involved in a number of Business Events,
