Careers

In the Careers Department, we aim to support each student on their journey towards their future pathways by considering the requirements prescribed in DE/DEL document ‘Preparing For Success’.

Our aims in Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) are:

  1. Self Awareness – To enable students to identify, assess and develop the skills and qualities necessary to choose and implement an appropriate career.
  2. Career Exploration – To acquire and evaluate information and review experiences. To identify and investigate appropriate career pathways and learning opportunities in education, training and employment.
  3. Career Management – To develop skills in career planning and employing effective decision-making strategies to manage transition and make suitable career development choices, with the appropriate advice and guidance.

 

The CEIAG Learning Entitlement consists of the following components.

  • Careers Education – This is delivered in classes, one per fortnight in Years 10, 11 and 12, and every week in Years 9, 13 and 14.
  • Career Information – This is provided through a blended programme of structured lessons, Xello, UniFrog and the Careers Library, Options Fairs and visits to Careers Exhibitions. We also offer Careers Interviews with DE Careers Advisers for all Y12 students (and other year groups by request), Labour Market Information including the latest data from the NISkills Barometer and 10X Economy, Year 13 Mock Interviews, Young Enterprise Workshops, Open Days, Options events, Educational Visits and Conventions, Guest Speakers, University talks, and a host of virtual opportunities.
  • Work Related Learning – This component is delivered through Work Experience in Years 11 and 13, visits into the school from outside bodies and employers, Young Enterprise Company programme in Year 13, Enterprise Education including workshops in Y8, 9 and 10, mock interviews, CVs, Personal statements. We also look at rights and responsibilities at work, current legislation etc.
  • Employability Skills – These include the wide range of skills, capabilities, attributes and dispositions which enable someone to become employable. These skills are embedded in the programmes of study across the curriculum and are supported by the Careers Programme. They include Numeracy, ICT, Communication, Working with others, Problem solving, Decision making and Self Management.
